Summary
This position is located within the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Reseach Center for USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Grand Forks, ND. In this position, you will study the acute effects of exercise and chronic effects of exercise training and diets on human physiological systems and outcomes including skeletal muscle, adipocytes, cardiovascular, metabolism and bioenergetics, energy expenditure, respiratory, and body composition.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Time in grade: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. Basic Requirements Physiology Series 0413: Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology. Evaluation of Education: Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences. Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology, or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in one or more phases of a research project related to human physiology; collecting data from human physiological testing; and operating and maintaining, laboratory equipment. OR Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biology, Human Physiology, Anatomy, Biomedical Science, Exercise Physiology, and Kinesiology. OR A combination of education and specialized experience as described above. Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience coordinating a research project related to human physiological studies; recruiting human study participants for behavior studies; collecting and evaluating data from human physiological testing; and operating, maintaining, calibrating, or modifying specialized equipment. OR Education: Successful completion of three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biology, Human Physiology, Anatomy, Biomedical Science, Exercise Physiology, and Kinesiology. OR A combination of education and specialized experience as described above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending or demonstrating proper techniques for exercise or exercise training. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. Work Environment: Work involves exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, such as those due to adverse weather conditions, such as high winds and low or high temperatures; initiating chemicals; contagious diseases if exposed to bodily fluids. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.
